Chandigarh restores Uber, Rapido licences; two-month compliance watch imposed

CHANDIGARH: The Chandigarh Administration has restored the aggregator licences of Uber and Rapido with immediate effect, allowing the ride-hailing platforms to resume operations subject to two months of compliance monitoring.

Transport Secretary Diprava Lakra, acting as the appellate authority, issued separate orders on October 27 restoring the licences of Uber India Systems Private Limited and Rapido operator Roppen Transportation Services Private Limited.

The State Transport Authority will monitor both companies’ compliance with the Chandigarh Administration Motor Vehicles Aggregators Rules, 2025. The restoration is conditional, and the authority has been directed to ensure adherence to the rules during the monitoring period.

The STA had suspended both licences for six months on September 8, citing alleged violations involving notified fares, driver insurance, local offices and the attachment of non-commercial vehicles.

Officials had maintained that the companies failed to meet prescribed requirements despite repeated notices and opportunities to comply. The concerns included documentation of drivers’ health and term insurance, training and fare implementation.

Both companies appealed, submitting that they had furnished compliance reports and were willing to address outstanding requirements. The appellate authority considered a six-month suspension excessive in the first instance, particularly in view of their assurances.

Uber also submitted that its Chandigarh office was functional. Rapido said it had shifted its local office and informed the authorities. The Times of India

Rapido separately welcomed the restoration, saying it would support continued transport services for passengers and earning opportunities for drivers associated with its platform.

The decision restores additional app-based travel options within Chandigarh, although actual booking availability will depend on vehicles and drivers returning to service. money.
